By 1889, Ellison was working in Todelo, Ohio as an engineer for the Maumee RM co. In 1900 he was living in Sparta, New Jersey, employed as a stationary engineer. At the age of 42, he was living in Riepetown, Nevada employed as the Superintendent of the copper mine. In the 1920's Ellison and his wife Lillie were living in Jerome, Arizona with their daughter Orvilla, her husband John Neagle and their grandson Jack. Ellison was still a supervisor of a copper mine. He retired to Santa Monica, California.

Ellison was born to Samuel and Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Vanderhoef,, in Toledo, Ohio. He had a brother named Ralf, that was 2 years younger. On March 24, 1890, he married Lillie Miller in Monroe, Michigan. Their daughter Orvilla was born in 1900. Over the years they lived in Riepetown, Nevada; Jerome, Arizona and retired to Santa Monica, California.
