Personal Biography:
Mr. Whitmore was highly active in all aspects of community life. He served on City Council and was Mayor of Ely at the time of his death. During World War 2 he served in the Army.

He was an avid hunter and handyman who was always supportive of others in their many endeavors. On one occasion he helped a local Italian family, named Ricci, by helping the boys stomp grapes to make some "nasty" taking wine. He also had a taste for Basque food (including Rocky Mountain Oysters) and frequently cooked for the Basque Festival.

Marrying his wife Arva in 1950, the couple had three daughters, Jody, LuJean and Penny. One of the main things LuJean recalls about her dad was his constant support and words of encouragement such as "always do your best," "if you think it you can do it," or "always made yourself proud." A loving grandfather, he would wrap up a visit by telling his daughters to "take your offspring and go home."

Upon being promoted to General Superintendent, he and his family moved into the Superintendent's house across the street from the Depot and Transportation Building.

Mr. Whitmore suffered heart damage during this time in the service. While passed away during heart surgery.
