Hired by the NNRy in 1907 as a fireman on the Main Line Passenger train between Cobre and Ely, a year later he transferred to the local passenger and mixed freight train between Ely and the Concentrator at McGill. He was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1915. On May 22, 1917, he accidentally bumped the train into a passenger car, causing minimal damage. He was charged with the repair costs and never had a serious incident the rest of his career. A distinguished engineer on the NNRy, he was selected to be the final engineer for the main line passenger train July 31, 1941. He officially retired in 1945 with 30 years of service as a locomotive engineer for the line and 38 years total.

Personal Biography:
William Young was born May 27, 1882 in Danville, Illinois. His father was Victor Young. In 1907 he moved to Ely and was hired by the NNRy as a fireman. In 1917 he joined the Army and wrote a letter to Master Mechanic William Elmore relating his experience at Camp Grant, 3 miles from Rockford, Illinois, with co-worker and now fellow solider William Padden. In 1944 he moved to Overton, Nebraska where he informed H.M. Peterson, then Trainmaster, about his improved health and the sand company operations there.
