While it is not certain when W. R. Elmore began his railroad career, in 1900 he was working for the Western & Atlantic Railroad in Georgia as a car inspector. Within a decade he found himself in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, working as a machinist for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. He was also a member of the International Association of Machinists.

By 1913, W. R. was foreman of the shops in Alamosa, and at the end of that year he received a promotion to general foreman of the D&RG shops in Salt Lake City. Within one or two years, W. R. was working for the Nevada Northern Railway as the general foreman of the locomotive and car department. In 1916, he was promoted to master mechanic.

Leaving the Nevada Northern in 1918, W. R. Elmore's railroad career spanned 20 years. Following his departure from Nevada, he worked briefly for Bettilyon Home Builders in Salt Lake City before traveling east to take a job as master mechanic for the munitions plant under construction in Nitro, West Virginia. He became ill within days of his arrival and passed shortly thereafter.

Personal Biography:
The first child of John and Eliza Elmore, William Robert (more commonly referred to as W. R.) Elmore was born in 1866 in Greenville, South Carolina. Though he spent his early years in that state, he later made his way to Georgia, where he married Martha Theodocia Fleming in 1894. Together they had four children.

Moving to Colorado in the early 1900's, W. R. was busy with work and civic affairs. In 1909 he was on the ballot for alderman in Alamosa, and in 1913 he was elected as a Colorado state representative. He was also an early proponent of the automobile, purchasing his own in 1911.

Promotions and a job change took W. R. first to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then to Ely, Nevada. While in Ely he married Carlia Blodgett, and they enjoyed traveling as well as their time in Ely.

In 1918 the Elmore's returned to Salt Lake City, and later that year W. R. took a job in West Virginia. He contracted influenza within days of his arrived and died from pneumonia shortly thereafter. He was laid to rest in Atlanta, Georgia.
