From the 1930 census, John was employed as a machinist in the Copper Mine in Ruth. He died in 1937 while still employed for the mine.

His second wife, Agnes, was a telephone operator for N.C.C.Co. in Ruth. The 1940 census shows her as a widow, age 45, living with her parents, Dennis Sullivan, 78 from North Ireland who had been employed as a track foreman for the mine, and mother Molly, 65 from Michigan.

John "Jack" Lake died in 1937, and a few years later Agnes died as a result of self-inflicted poison according to newspaper articles. She was buried in the Ely City Cemetery. She was survived by a son, R.D. McLeod of Portola and a daughter, Mrs. James Williams of Ely.

Personal Biography:
Born of parents John and Mary Bell Lake, John was the first born son. He grew up in the railroad town of Evanston, Wyoming. This railroad town had a big impact on the Lake family as their seven sons all worked for the railroad industry, four with the NNRy: John, Thomas, George and Alexander.

John married Margaret Edwards on September 24, 1903 in Evanston. She died in 1922 due to complications from surgery on January 16, 1922 at the age of 37 in Salt Lake City. She is buried in the Evanston City Cemetery.

The 1930 census shows John living in Ruth, age 47, with his second wife Agnes M. Sullivan and stepdaughter Jane aged 11.
