East Ely Yard
Building Description:
The carpenter shop originally consisted of two rooms, with the third room on the south side added in 1920. The original 1915 roof can still be seen in the addition where the new roof was built over it. The north room has an electric motor that drives a leather belt system that in turn powers the machinery throughout the building. Woodwork was done in this building for the rolling stock and the buildings and many of the wooden toolboxes and sawhorses seen around the property were built in this shop. The machinery and layout of the building remains largely unchanged and could, with some work, be put back into operation.
The small office attached to the side of the building was for the car repair foreman. The office remains in much the same condition as when Giovannia (John) Mariani, the last car foreman, left when the railroad was closed in June of 1983. The file cabinets and shelves still house the historic records kept about the repairs that were completed in the RIP building across the tracks.
