In 1966 he was appointed Auditor following the retirement of H.S. Fay. The following year he was also appointed as Freight Claim Agent.

|
Mike Fondi was the son of Carmine and Francesca Acquafondata, both Italian immigrants, who moved to Ely in 1921. He attended White Pine High School and while in school began working for the railroad as a call boy. His father was killed in a train accident on August 15, 1924. He married Clara Fondi and had a son, Michael.
