Originally, William was hired as a salesman for the railroad before moving into operations. Starting as a brakeman he was promoted to conductor prior to 1920. In 1939, he was the conductor for the main line passenger train between Cobre and Ely when it struck the rear of a freight train. On July 31, 1941 he was the conductor of the last Main Line Passenger train and retired soon after.

Born to Irish immigrants Edward and Catherine (Hohan) Padden in Pennsylvania, William moved to Ely sometime before 1910. Around that time he married his first wife Jessie Padden who would pass away soon after. On May 14, 1921 he married his second wife Mary (O'Sullivan) Padden, and they would have three children, Mary Kathryn, Elizabeth and Curtis. During World War 1 he joined the army as a private and trained at Camp Grant three miles outside Rockford, Illinois with fellow NN railroader William Young.
